Too Cool for School!

Partner Reading

This week, in addition to independent reading, we tried partner reading! I was so impressed! We enjoyed our books so well with partners. This week we will continue to learn more about what good reading partners do. We will learn how to retell stories together, talk about our books, and take turns reading. :)

Shared Writing

We are beginning to learn our sight words.

We have been using our new words in shared writing.

Soon, your student will bring home a deck of sight word cards to use for practice at home!

All Sorts of Sorts

We have been practicing sorting by color and shape. This week we will work on sorting by size and other attributes. Practice at home with any collections of item you have.

Happy Birthday Toree!

Apple Day in Photos

A Party for Clifford

Last Monday, we kicked off our week by celebrating Clifford's birthday!

We joined children from New York City via a webcast to meet the author of Clifford's books, Norman Bridwell and to the big red dog himself!

We are very excited about our apple celebration tomorrow!

However, we are lacking in apple treats! If you are able to help with any of the items listed below, let me know!

Apple Week

Throughout the week, we will be studying apples and using them to help us learn more about counting, patterning, and graphing.

On Wednesday, we will learn about Johnny Appleseed and celebrate his birthday.

To celebrate, we will have an apple feast!

As well, if your child has any clothing with apples, Wednesday is the day to wear them! :)

We need your help with collecting applicious items!

Thank you for your support! :)

Wanted: Room Parent

A few parents have expressed interest in being our room parent. However, I can't remember who these individuals are and I'm not seeing any indication of interest on the volunteer forms.

So... if you are interested, please email me!

Thank you! :)

New Favorite Songs

The two songs below have quickly become favorites in our classroom.
I love hearing the kids sing them!

 Don't Give Up

Who I Am

Play them and see if your little sings along! It's sweet!

The Best Place to Read

In Reader's Workshop, we are continuing to talk about what good readers do.

One thing that good readers do is find a comfortable place to read that is free from distractions.

We read "The Best Place to Read"

Then we talked about where our favorite places are.

We all had favorite reading spots at home that were our "Best Place to Read".

Finally, we decided what the best places for reading in our classroom were. These will be our reading spots for independent reading during readers workshop each day.
We will switch spots each week or so.

What are we doing in Literacy Stations this week?

We are sorting letter and numbers.

We are matching uppercase and lowercase letters.

We are illustrating our color songs in the poetry station.

We are working hard to learn our color words in the word work station.

We are doing more name practice.

In the alphabet work station, we are looking close at b's and g's to identify them correctly.

We are writing the names of our friends on the aquadoodle mat.

In the pocket chart station, we are pracitcing reading our color words.

We are word hunting for school words in our Read and Write the Room Station.

We are continuing our letter formation practice on the ipads.

In the science station, we are taking a closer look at our five senses.

Survey Says

This week we began looking at how we can collect information and graph it.

Each morning for bellowork, we begin with a survey.

The students cast their votes by placing their namework sheet in the appropriate basket.

Then as a class, we count our votes and look at the information we have collected.

Our surveys are helping us learn new things about our class.

After completing our graphs, we ask questions such as
Which as the most?
Which has the least?
How many more?

At home, you can continue teaching how to collect information by counting the number of chairs in your house, tables, couches. Then have those same math talks that we have in class using words such as most, least, and how many more?
